An Introduction to Statistics

Homework for Statistics Lesson 1

  1. What is the difference between statistics and statistic?
statistics: the collection of methods used in planning an experiment, collect data and analyze it. (a discipline)
statistic: a numerical value, characteristic of a sample

  2. Would you trust a 1998 poll to be accurate when saying that Clinton needs to resign if you find out that the poll is collected by people calling in response to a newspaper article? Why or why not?
Biased: most of the people are fed up with and do not want to have anything to do with Clinton....

  3. What are the two catagories of data starting with the letter q?
    Quantitative, Qualitative

  4. Arrange in order from highest to lowest the four levels of measurement.
    Ratio, Interval, Ordinal, Nominal

  5. The first edition of a textbook contained 600 exercises. For the revised edition, the author removed 50 of the original exercises and added 350 new exercises. Complete each of the following statements.

  6. There are 900 exercises in the revised ed.
    600 - 50 + 350 = 900

  7. There are 50% more exercises in the revised ed. than the 1st ed.
    300/600 * (100) = 50%

  8. Assume 25% of the deer population is infected with TB. Suppose the total population is reduced by 10% by recurring annual methods. If the initial population was 100,000, how many infected deer are left? (Assume that the reduction methods operate independantly of infection.)
    22500 because: 100,000(.25)(.1) = 2500, then 25000 - 2500 = 22500

  9. If 0°C = 32°F and 100°C = 212°F, find the number that represents the same temperature on both scales.
    -40; F = (9/5)C + 32,  You want F = C , so F = (9/5)F + 32 and 5F = 9F + 160 or 4F=-160, thus F = C at -40
