Numbers and Their Application to Math and Science
Homework for Numbers Lesson 0
- Fill in the following table (3x3) with the digits 1-9 in such a way that
each row and column totals 15. You will receive bonus points for
also having the diagonals so sum.
- Complete the following magic square by filling in the squares with the
numbers 5 through 20, no number being used more than once.
Each column, row and both diagonals must add up to 50.
- Classify the books in your home six different ways (example hard cover,
western, text, etc.) and count or estimate how many (what percent)
are in each classification. Do they (the percentage) add up to how many
books (100 %)? If not, why not.
- A square number, or perfect square, is any number which can be expressed
as the product of a number multiplied with itself. For example,
9 = 3 × 3, 9 trees can be put into a square figure:
Using the set of digits {1, 4, 9}, form as many square numbers as possible.
The digits may be reused, such as 11 and 199 (which are not squares), to form
larger square numbers. (Bonus for more than six such numbers.)
